5 on Friday – Winter Blues

Hello Friday!  Glad to see ya again!

{one}

I am so sick of this weather!  Yesterday was 18 degrees and we got about an inch of snow.  I welcomed this behavior back in December and maybe January.  But now…I am over it and ready to not see my jacket until at least December.

I am obsessed with my super easy vday decor.  Since it’s been so cold, I haven’t been getting out much the past few days so what’s a girl to do?  Valentine’s crafts of course!  I saw this pin with printout hearts and it was as simple as cutting and hanging up.  I used some tiny cute clothespins left over from wedding shower crafts and a ribbon to hang them up.

Mental note – update picture frame photos haha

Since I have been spending a lot of time indoors, it has given me a chance to get some serious use out of the Barre3 DVDs I got for christmas.  I’ve done them 3 days in a row, and I am feeling the burn in my core and arms!

I really hope it warms up before tomorrow morning at 8 am because I am running the Hot Chocolate 15k!  Right now the weather is showing an expected 30 degrees at start time…wonderful!  I just really really hope it is above freezing.  But hey, at least I get a bunch of hot chocolate at the end right?  Totally makes it worth running 9.3 miles for huh? 😉

I am no stranger to running in miserable weather…time to bust out the ‘ol penguin hat!

I thought I would cure myself of the winter blues by perusing some of my favorite online stops for sales and found this amazing deal on a Kendra Scott necklace that I think would make an excellent addition to my collection.  For a savings of $128, don’t mind if I do!!!  Plus, I think it would look so pretty with outfits of all seasons!  Last Call always has great deals on Kendra Scott if you catch it at the right time!  Check it out, you won’t be sorry!

That’s all folks!!  Have a great weekend, and cross your fingers I don’t freeze to death tomorrow morning!!

The Glam Series – Eye Makeup Wish List

GLAMBUTTON_zps4a7ccd0f

This week in The Glam Series everyone is talking about their eye makeup routines.  Since I already posted here about my favorite eye makeup products, I thought I would just talk about some eye makeup products I am currently lusting after.

Eye Makeup Wish List

{1}

Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette

I have been part of the Naked Cult Club for a few years now, and actually recently (well for my birthday – thanks Elana!!)  got a replacement since I ran out of all my “go-to” shades.  I wasn’t that impressed with the Naked 2 so didn’t have high hopes when I heard that they were coming out with a third member of the Naked family.  However, this palette is right up my alley!  I love all the shimmery rose-y shades!

{2}

Benefit Watt’s Up

I received a small sample tube of this in my Sephora birthday gift.  I have always been a fan of brow bone highlight powder, but never used a cream based highlighter.  I found that this product did much more than just regular powder because you can use it on multiple areas of your face.  Nose, inner eye, cheek bones…it covers all the bases and lasts all day.

{3}

Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes

I’ve never really got into “fancy” mascara.  Everyone seems to be obsessed with Benefit “They’re Real” but I didn’t think it was any more special than my drugstore mascara (and almost 3 times the price!).  My mom got me this awesome “mascara variety pack” for christmas that had about 10 different mascara minis (some are actually full sized!) so I was excited to try out some new fancy brands before committing to a full size.  This one has been my favorite so far!  I really feel like it makes my lashes look longer, more defined, and full.  I plan on picking up a full size whenever I run out of all my minis!

Which new products are on your wish list?  Be sure to check out everyone else’s eye makeup routines over on Jordon’s blog!

PS Hope you like the new theme…I am slowly learning how to be more “blog-savvy”!

Thirsty Tuesday – Favorite Wine

Is Tuesday to early in the week to talk about wine? Well if so I apologize!  I wanted to briefly share my top 2 favorite wines of the moment!
Favorite Wine
I don’t discriminate when it comes to wine – at least  not anymore!  I used to be a 100% white wine only drinker.  Starting first with good ‘ol White Zin back in college (straight out of a martini glass if me and the roomies were feeling extra classy).  I quickly moved to Chardonnay and that stayed my wine of choice for quite awhile.  I remember being at a work dinner soon after graduating college and an older woman made me feel like I was a child since I ordered a white wine.  “Ohhhh you are young that explains why you are drinking that” and then turned her nose in the air and sipped on her Malbec.  At that moment, I knew I needed to branch out and try my hand at some reds (initially it was just so I could fit in during situations where people are sharing a bottle of wine without having to be difficult and ordering something else).  I first eased into the red territory with Pinot Noir and then after establishing a desire for the Pinot, I moved into Cabernet Sauvignons, then took a trip to Napa with my college besties and from then on – I decided I would drink anything!
{Napa with Elana and Jenn}

 Introducing my current favorite wines:

Apothic Red Wine Blend
This has served as my “go-to” red wine over the past year when I didn’t feel like putting in much effort to decide which bottle had the coolest label research a new brand of wine.  It doesn’t disappoint!  It is usually about $9 a bottle at the store so it won’t bust your budget!
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc
This is a new recent favorite.  My Junior League committee usually goes out to get dinner and drinks at Breadwinners after our meetings because they have half priced bottles of wine on Wednesdays.  Depending on how many girls we have, we usually just order a few bottles and all share.  Over the past year, this bottle has become a regular for us!  It can be found at stores for about $12 but of course way more at a restaurant.
What are your favorite wines??
PS Shout out to Jordon for introducing me to Polyvore which I used to make this cute little picture!  I am now obsessed! #newbieblogger

The Glam Series – Face Time

The Glam Series

Hello!  I am finally almost recovered from the worst sickness of 2014 (fingers crossed).  I am excited to join back in to Jordon’s linkup this week to talk all about my face makeup routine!  Now bear with me…none of the items I am about to discuss are fancy or expensive but they work for me and have been longtime staples in my routine.  I have found that spending more moola on facial treatments has been more beneficial to me than breaking the bank on foundations which gives me more room to splurge on other items (ie fancy eye makeups and eyebrow kits).  But if you are looking for some amazing drugstore finds, you have come to the right place! 🙂

{one}

Benefit Porefessional

s1259068-main-Lhero(via)

After applying my Nerium Day Cream (which I talked about last week), I then apply a layer of this magic to my face.  I have been blessed with larger pores (which I am hoping my beloved Nerium shrinks down) so when I received a sample of Porefessional in my Birchbox a few years ago I was very excited to see if it could assist with hiding my pores.  I was immediately sold based on the texture.  It felt like I was applying liquid silk to my face!  It is a somewhat nude color which blends into my skin tone that helps disguise the pores and also redness.  I feel like it acts like an warmup to the foundation.  Kind of like a wannabe concealer, but for all over not just certain spots.   I have since gone through multiple tubes.  The only downside is the price.  At $30 a pop, I can’t help but ration it.  I try to only use it when I know I am having a long day without time to touch up my makeup, or when I know I will be taking lots of pictures.  I am actually all out and planned on using my Birchbox points to cash in on a new tube…but they are on backorder!  If that doesn’t tell you this product is a winner, I don’t know what will! 🙂  If you have any other suggestions for a winner primer that is possibly cheaper, please let me know!

{two}

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer

6800521_320x385

(via)

Now, this isn’t really marketed as a foundation, but I have been using it as a foundation for about 3.5 years.  After applying my primer base, I slap on a layer of this “Healthy Skin Enhancer” by using foundation brush and I feel like it helps tone out my skin and leaves me a clean pallete to apply my blush and bronzer.  I really like this product because it acts as a moisturizer, foundation, and a sunscreen and doesn’t leave me feeling like I have a thick layer of makeup on my face.  I like the light clean feeling when it comes to base layer makeup.  I use shade #30, light to neutral and it has not strayed me wrong.  It is very light so I feel like I don’t have to worry about having a dreaded makeup line.

{three}

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Pressed Powder

6810501_320x385(via)

Notice a trend?  I have had nothing but luck with the Neutrogena cosmetic line for the past few years, so I have been loyal.  After applying my “foundation” base in the form of the Healthy Skin Enhancer, I then apply it’s cousin, the Healthy Skin Pressed Powder with my kabuki brush.  I also use shade #30 in the pressed powder.  I like this powder because it helps prevent shine and makes me feel like my foundation layer is set.  It also helps serve as a touchup for shine throughout the day.  You can also see an alternative use to this powder in my eye makeup post last week.

{four}

Milani Baked Blush

220

(via)

Brace yourself…this may be the best drugstore find you will ever experience.  I picked this blush up on a whim.  Now mind you, I like the “dewy”/”sunkissed” look when it comes to makeup so I gravitate towards more shimmery  blush, eye makeup, and bronzers.  I was at Walgreens and I saw this blush and since Ulta had recently discontinued my current blush I figured I might as well branch out to something new and have never looked back!  I have always found that I liked the “baked” blush and bronzers because they incorporate different shades within the blush so it isn’t just one uniform color.  This blush has several shades of pink, bronze, and a natural that all blend together for the perfect blushy glow.  I have only used the Bellissimo Bronze shade, but depending on your skin tone there may be a better one for you.  Milani offers a total of 7 different blush shades!  It is only $8 so you can’t really lose if you are looking to branch out.  Beats paying $20-$30 at the department store counter!

{five}

Physician’s Formula Custom Blush and Eye Shadow

02745

(via)

This was another random pick.  I was at Target one day and we all know what happens when you go to Target…you walk in for toothpaste and you leave with a shirt, shoes, workout top, and a few new makeup purchases.  Am I right?  Well this one fall day around my birthday, I was running out of of summer glow and also on my bronzer so I thought I would do some experimenting with a new shade of fake summer glow.  I liked the different colors of this compact and how the different colors could blend together to create a unique bronze color.  At first, I thought it was really dark, but then learned to just slowly blend from the top and then work to the bottom of the compact.  I have only used it as a bronzer due to the shade I purchased, but I think you could possibly look into a different shade and use it for both a blush and a bronzer.

———

There you have it!  My face makeup routine in a nutshell…and all (except the Porefessional) can be found at your local drugstore or Target!  How’s that for keeping it simple!  I can’t wait to see what other products everyone is using!  Happy Thursday!

5 on Friday – The Sick Edition

Happy Friday!  It really does seem like it was just last friday, and I honestly wish it still was.  I ended up getting sick last weekend while in Austin and am currently still fighting off what ended up being strep throat.  More like the world’s worst case of strep throat, at least that I have ever had!

20140123-180701.jpg

I thought I would share my top 5 saving graces while being sick.

{one}

Full House

Full_House_(cast)

(via)

“You got it dude!”  One of the perks of being home during the work week is the ability to catch re-runs upon re-runs of classic childhood television.  I think I have watched a total of 25 episodes this week.  I did get angry reach a low point when I realized that the same episodes from the morning also play again in the afternoon.  No worries…I quickly found some episodes of “Boy Meets World” to ease my pain.

{two}

Green Tea

Soothe-K-cup-300x300

(via)

I am usually more of an iced sweet tea drinking girl, but since my throat has felt like it has a cactus shoved in back of it, I was willing to try anything.  I picked these K-Cups up randomly as a last minute purchase while stocking up on soft cold food items the other day and was pleasantly surprised.  It feels so good on my throat and has a nice citrusy taste.  I can see myself drinking these even when I am not sick.  I think they would taste good iced on a hot summer day!

{three}

Personal Sized Blender

mini blender

(via) – mine is red 🙂

This was another Christmas gift I received but I didn’t use it until this week.  When my throat hurt so bad I couldn’t eat I busted out this bad boy and made a protein shake which held me over for about 30 minutes BUT it was much easier than busting out (and then cleaning) my huge blender.  This personal sized blender doubles as a cup so you can just pop it off, and start sipping away!  This week has been perfect for experimenting with shakes since I haven’t had much of an appetite and been craving cold treats.  I also used this to make my new favorite frozen treat…

{four}

Gatorade Slushies

This recipe will blow your mind…but beware it is very complicated:  Fill blender with ice and then fill with your favorite flavor of Gatorade.  Blend.  Ta-Daaaa!

20140123-184403.jpg

(Zebra Snuggie is optional)

Simple, yet so refreshing.  I feel like these would make an excellent pool drink in the summer with the addition of vodka! 🙂

{five}

Cold Treats

In addition to the Gatorade Slushies mentioned above, I stocked up on a large supply of Jello, pudding, sherbet, and popsicles which are all a dream come true on my poor throat.  Plus, when else can I allow myself to eat this much sugar without feeling guilty?  PS the sherbet is my favorite and reminds me of that yummy punch that is always served at bridal showers!  Also, why is it spelled “Sherbet” and not “Sherbert”?

20140123-185325.jpg

(My grocery store haul)

That’s all folks!  Hopefully I am on the upswing and will be back to 100% next week.  I am looking forward to not cringing in pain every time I swallow or eat! 😦  Have a great weekend!

The Glam Series Linkup – Skin Routine

GLAMBUTTON_zps4a7ccd0f

I am excited to participate in Jordan’s fun new linkup about favorite beauty products!  I am excited to discover some new tricks and products and also share with you some of my own.  The first week of this linkup is all about skin!

So growing up I felt like I always struggled with my skin.  It was never terrible but never flawless.  I have switched up my skin routine many many times, but I feel like I have settled into a pretty good routine now and have been pretty pleased with the results!  Introducing my skin routine BFFs!

Clarisonic Plus

clarisonic

(via)

Introducing the Clarisonic Plus!  I got this for my birthday a few years ago from my parents and it was one of those gifts that I didn’t ask for, but was a very pleasant surprise.  Mine didn’t come with all the stuff in the above photo, I just tried to find the one with the same pattern as mine because I think it’s pretty! 🙂  My mom had heard about how great these were and knew how I have always been sensitive about my skin and tried a bunch of products so thought I should give this a shot.  I was hooked from my first use!  It felt like I was getting a mini facial every time I washed my face!  I don’t use it every night (even though I should) but I can definitely tell the difference in my skin if I haven’t used my Clarisonic in a few days.  After a few weeks I remember getting compliments from friends asking what new product I had been using.  I have since got many friends on board the Clarisonic bandwagon including my mom and sister.  They both have the Mia variety and it seems to work the same.  The only difference is that mine has different speeds and beeps to let me know when to move to the next area of my face.

Philosophy Purity Made Simple

purity

(via)

I received a sample of Philosophy Purity Made Simple in my Birchbox about two years ago and have been hooked ever since.  I love this cleanser because it is very gentle and mild and leaves my skin feeling soft.  I like it so much I buy it in the bulk 32 oz size!  I like that it includes the pump.  It lasts me for about a year and is a great investment.  My mom usually hooks me up w/ one every Christmas so I have a constant supply of my favorite cleanser! 🙂

Nerium AD

nerium

(via)

Have you heard of this stuff yet?  My friend Jenn starting selling Nerium back in November and when she told me about it, it was totally new to me.  Since then, I feel like I have been hearing more and more about it.  She told me about all of it’s benefits and encouraged me to check out all the before and after pictures online.  The pictures are crazy and I almost thought they were photoshopped because of the drastic changes I saw.  This product is all natural and was developed by accident when they were trying to create a topical cure for skin cancer…they realized it wasn’t a cure, but ended up being a game changer in skin care!  I also have always known Jenn to have super sensitive skin, so the fact that she was backing this product enough to sell it, made me very interested to try it.  She said it not only helps with anti-aging prevention (never too young to start!) but it also helps with overall tone and pore size (which I feel like I have always struggled with).  Jenn gave me a 7 day sample of both the day and night cream and after about 2 days, I was hooked and already asking how I could place my order.  The night cream smells a little “plant-like” but that is due to the fact that it is all natural and doesn’t contain any perfumes.  The day cream doesn’t have the same smell but I love how it makes my makeup go on smooth and almost acts like a primer.  It is a tad on the high end when it comes to price…but you get a discount if you sign up to have it on auto deliver (or as they call it, a “Preferred Customer”).  I signed up to get both the day and night cream on the monthly delivery and it is $120.  I do think that both the day and night bottles will last you longer than a month, so I am not sure how long I will keep getting it monthly, but it is much cheaper to get it this way than “a la carte” (about a $40 difference!).  But so far, my skin has never looked better!  It feels so smooth and I have noticed a significant difference in the size of my pores and I even noticed a wrinkle on my forehead has faded!  It caught me off guard one day because it wasn’t something I was overly concerned with so it was a nice surprise when I noticed it faded.  I joked with my friend Jenn about how I wish this stuff made fat disappear.  Wouldn’t that be nice?  Just to provide some proof of the disappearing wrinkle:

20140122-193242.jpg

Ignore the redness…I just got out of the shower in both pics and my face tends to get red from the hot water.  It is a small change but I think it’s pretty drastic for only using the product for 3o days.  I am excited to see how my skin improves with further use!  If you are interested in trying Nerium, you can use this link which takes you directly to my customer page which gives me a referral bonus! 🙂  Or, I encourage you to find someone you know that sells it and ask them to give you a 7 day trial.  I promise you will love it (and if you don’t they offer a money back guarantee)!

Thanks for stopping by!  Hope I helped you discover some new products and I can’t wait to read the other link-up posts to discover everyone else’s favs!  Happy Thursday!

Workout Gadgets

Since we are at the start of a new year when all the healthy New Year’s Resolutions are in full swing, I thought I would share some of my favorite workout gadgets.

4e666ab3c95715aab9f8d7b25fe78a4f_50d1f0fcdb2d5

Garmin Forerunner 305

20140114-211953.jpg

{My watch at last weekend’s 10k race}

I have had this watch for a few years. I asked for it for Christmas when I first got into long distance running. I have a hard time pacing myself so I always ended up starting my races much faster than my “happy pace” without realizing it and then I would find myself hitting a wall pretty fast. I did a lot of research on the Garmin watches and liked this one the best because it was simple (despite it’s ginormous size) and easy to view all of the different metrics. It shows total run time, pace and distance on the main screen and when you scroll to the 2nd screen it shows fastest pace, lap time, and calories burned. It comes with a heart rate chest strap which will give you a more accurate calorie count, but it will still calculate the calories without the strap based on the weight/height you enter into the watch. I rarely wear the chest strap because I am not too concerned with the amount of calories burned when I go on a nice long run. I was a little disappointed that the watch and chest strap only worked for calculating calories when running or walking (it apparently calculates it based on your heart rate + distance/pace traveled). I learned that the hard way the first time I wore it to BodyPump and it showed up as 0 calories burned! Bummer! But overall I have enjoyed having this little ginormous gadget on my wrist while I run. It is an older model so there may be better ones out there, but for not this watch works for me!

PS Warning – this watch will attract comments from random people about it’s size. I tend to get asked if I am an air traffic controller or an employee of NASA whenever I wear it to a race. Come on people, get creative!

Polar FT4 Heart Rate Monitor

As mentioned above, my running watch won’t calculate calories for non-running related activities which is fine because I used to just enter in my workout activity based on the calories the Lose It app suggested. But after doing that (on and off) for years I started to get a bit more curious as to how many calories I actually was burning during my workouts. Especially because I recently started incorporating more barre workouts into my routine and I had no idea how many calories that burned because for the most part it is low impact (but still leaves you feeling the burn!). I looked into the FitBit and the Nike Fuel Band which are awesome because they can sync to your phone and you can see a ton of great stats…but I knew ultimately I wouldn’t want to wear a gadget 24/7 and just wanted something to show me my calorie burn while actually working out.  I have knew Polar was a great brand for heart rate monitors so started to pay attention to others at the gym and my cousin Stephanie just got a new fancy HRM for Christmas and gave me the heads up that this website had the best prices. I realized I didn’t really need anything super fancy and opted for this model because it was A. Cheap and B. Cute.  Priorities I tell ya!!  So far this watch has worked out nicely and given me extra motivation during my workouts because I am excited to see how many calories I can burn during my workout classes.
